Introduction

Artificial Intelligence (AI), a branch of CSE, aims at developing algorithms that enable computers to exhibit various aspects of intellectual behavior such as:

  • Perception

  • Reasoning

  • Learning

  • Communicating

  • Acting in a complex environment

AI, as a field of research, develops and studies methodologies to enable computers to:

  • Perceive the environment

  • Learn to take actions that maximize the chances of achieving certain defined goals

The Dartmouth Summer Research Project on AI, was a 1956 summer workshop widely considered as the founding event of AI as a research field. The workshop was organized by John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky, Nathaniel Rochester and Claude Shanon.
